Hatsumode
Himself and I went to our local temple Myohoji (Buddhist) and out local shrine Omiya Hachiman (Shinto) in order to wish for a good year. We figured we would cover our bases. I think we mainly go for the omatsuri (festival) food-- noodles, meat on a stick, amazake, Turkish Donner Kebab etc.
The PA system at Myohoji: "Happy New year folks. Please watch your belongings. You know, people get really tired waiting in line, and get real forgetful. Last night some one forgot their dog, which is really bad, as it's the year of the dog. We found the owners though, so no worries there. . ."
It seemed that everyone brought their dog to hatsumode, as it is the year of the dog.
