His previous pearl of wisdom last September on this matter was that emperors should be allowed to have concubines in order to produce a male heir.

I never got this male heir obsession among the royalist set. If you really wanted to guarantee with certainty royal blood in the infant, shouldn't the line be matrilineal? Especially in the pre-DNA test days, you could guarantee you have identified the mother properly, but it's a lot harder to identify the father. . .
